Powered by the new 400hp American Liberty engine, the Airco DH9A was an improved variant of the de Havilland designed DH9 light bomber. It saw service only in the last days of World War 1 but soldiered on in large numbers after the armistice. The DH9A formed the backbone of RAF air operations in the Middle East through 1931. A larger radiator was fitted to cope with the high temperatures, while additional water containers and spare parts (including spare wheels lashed to the fuselage) were carried in case the aircraft was forced down. Despite the extra burden the “Ninak” and its robust Liberty engine performed admirably in the primitive desert environment.
