The United States' first major offensive against the Japanese in the Pacific was at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Island chain. The Marines quickly seized the enemy's main airstrip. Renamed Henderson Field after a Marine pilot killed at Wake Island, this airstrip became the center of Marine air operations on Guadalcanal. Shown here is a Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat of VMF-121 piloted by Marine Capt. Joe Foss in a brief encounter with a Japanese Zero. Capt Joe Foss went on to become the U.S. Marine Corps' highest scoring ace.
