Originating from a Jack Northrop design, Douglas Aircraft developed the Dauntless into one of World War II’s most important aircraft. The sturdy, easy to fly dive-bomber was instrumental in the American victories over the Japanese Fleet, and it continued to serve through the end of the war long after its replacement, the SB2C Helldiver, had been delivered. This SBD-3 was flown at the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942 by Ensign Lew Hopkins of VB-6 from the USS Enterprise.
