The XS-1 rocket powered research aircraft was designed by Bell Aircraft to attain the speed of Mach 1. The fuselage was fashioned from the profile of a .050 caliber bullet because it was understood at the time that this shape was stable at very high speeds. On October 14, 1947 Captain Chuck Yeager flew the XS-1 at the speed of sound and became the first man to penetrate the “sound barrier”. This was the first of many research programs to study and understand the effects that supersonic and later hypersonic speeds had on aircraft design. These flights were known by the pilots as “chasing the demon”.
