This work depicts Pappy Boyington’s last engagement with Japanese fighters. The text reads: “On January 3, 1944 while flying F4U-1A Corsair Bu No 17915, Pappy Boyington tied World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 enemy planes destroyed, before he was himself shot down. He survived imprisonment in a Japanese prisoner of war camp until the end of hostilites and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his outstanding wartime performance.”
