When Grumman could no longer keep up with demand for the new F6F Hellcats, the manufacture of the TBF Avengers was turned over to General Motors. Designated TBMs, these aircraft were virtually indistinguishable from the Grumman produced Avengers. This TBM-1C carries the three-color camouflage paint scheme and markings of VT-51 flown by Lt. George H. W. Bush serving aboard the USS San Jacinto in 1944.
