The Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk was developed to operate with the U.S.S. Macon and the U.S.S. Akron. These giant dirigibles were 785 feet long, and they could each contain four Sparrowhawk fighters on a hangar deck within their hulls. A Sparrowhawk was launched and retrieved from the airship by means of a retractable trapeze arm that attached to a hook apparatus on the airplane. This F9C-2 is from the "Flying Trapeze" squadron stationed aboard the U.S.S. Macon.
