At the end of WWII Douglas Aircraft anticipated a strong demand for commercial DC-4s incorporating the latest improvements of the C-54 Skymaster. A new version was offered which had no cargo door and was specifically a passenger transport with accommodations for 44 passengers. Designated DC-4-1009 these aircraft were met with only moderate success against the flood of cheap surplus C-54s. Only senenty nine DC-4-1009s were built. The first was NC10201 (c/n 42904) delivered to Western Airlines on January 18, 1946
