Before the U.S. Government dumped military C-54s on the post war civilian market in 1947 Douglas was looking to build DC-4 for the anticipated boom in airline orders. The surplus C-54s ruined any chance Douglas had of selling brand new DC-4 airliners. Douglas only produced 79 new-build DC-4s between January 1946 and August 1947. Purchasers of new-build DC-4s included Pan American Airways, National Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Western Airlines in the USA, and KLM Royal Dutch Air Lines, Scandinavian Airlines System, Iberia Airlines of Spain, Swissair, Air France, Sabena Belgian Airlines.
