This is Roscoe Turner’s Wedell-Williams Special as it appeared in the 1939 Thompson Trophy Race. After experiencing a serious crash in August 1936, the aircraft was rebuilt with a shorter tail section and lengthened gear legs. This gave it tricky ground handling characteristics but it was still a strong competitor around the pylons. While Roscoe flew his new “Meteor Special” for the 1937-39 Thompson races, Joe Mackey had an agreement with Roscoe to fly the Wedell-Williams aircraft during those three years of the event.
