The PBY Catalina became the U.S.Navy’s most indispensable patrol bomber of World War II. It had the capability of flying very long mission over large expanses of ocean. It also gained a reputation as an effective search and rescue aircraft, earning the affectionate nickname“Dumbo.” Introduced in 1939, the PBY-5 was the first Catalina to have the distinctive rear fuselage gun turret blisters.
