A testament to the B-52’s effectiveness as a strategic bomber is its longevity. The Stratofortress has been on active duty since 1955. In that time it has seen constant use as the Strategic Air Command’s deterrent in the Cold War, a strategic bomber in the Vietnam War, Gulf War and in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is the U.S. Air Force’s intention to keep the big B-52 in service until at least 2040. This B-52D is shown in the Cold War bare aluminum and white paint scheme adopted by SAC during the late 1950s.
