The B-1B Lancer offers a most pleasing shape with its blended wing body and variable-sweep wing. It is hard to imagine that this graceful machine is an efficient weapon of war and efficient it is. The Lancer’s semi-stealthy airframe can deliver a variety of weapons, both nuclear and conventional, on long intercontinental missions without refueling while advanced electronic countermeasures enhance its survivability. The first B-1B “Star of Abilene” was delivered in 1985 and the 100th and final Lancer was delivered in 1988. The U.S.A.F. projects the useful service life of the B-1B Lancer to 2038.
