The Curtiss SB2C Helldiver was intended to replace the SBD Dauntless as the Navy’s front line dive-bomber. Initially, the Helldiver was a failure as a carrier-borne bomber and earned the nickname “the Beast.” Eventually all of its problems were overcome and the Helldiver became an excellent Navy and Marine Corps dive bomber through World War II and into the postwar years. This SB2C-3 is painted in the scheme of VB-83 stationed on board the U.S.S. Essex in February 1945.
