Looking at the B-58 Hustler today, its hard to believe that it made its first flight in 1956. It was the U.S. Air Force’s first supersonic bomber and could attain the speed of Mach 2. Entering this realm of speed and performance presented Convair engineers with many challenges. Many problems had to be solved, from overcoming the heat generated by the aircraft traveling at such speeds to ejecting crewmembers a Mach 2 and protecting sensitive electronic systems. This illustration shows off the Hustler’s revolutionary delta wing planform.
