The Douglas DC-3 was actually a sideline effort to make the DC-2 into a comfortable sleeper airliner. To accommodate the sleeping accommodations demanded by American Airlines the DC-3 was larger with a wider cabin and could carry a greater payload at a longer range. It was the first airliner that could haul passengers without relying on government subsidies. With more than ten thousand DC-3s built as both commercial and military transport, the DC-3 has been proven to be a remarkably tough and versatile airplane. Today, more than sixty years after it first took to the sky, hundreds of DC-3s are still flying passengers and freight.
