The P2V Neptune with its high aspect ratio wing, large fuel capacity and a pair of Wright R-3350 turbo-compound engines put the seaplane out of business as a maritime patrol bomber. Now a land plane could perform long distance missions without the need for ship tenders. In 1946 a Neptune set a distance record of 11,235 miles flying no stop from Columbus, Ohio to Perth, Australia. This P2V-7 flew with VP-65 from Point Mugu, California 1973.
