This painting depicts the Italian Macchi M-39 leading the American's Curtiss R3C-4 at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The Americans were the favorite to win the 1926 Schneider Trophy Race. The race was originally scheduled to be held in September, but the Americans agreed to give the Italian\'s more time to get their aircraft ready. Under much pressure and with the leadership of the brilliant aircraft designer Mario Castoldi, the Italian team were able to enter their superb Macchi designed M-39 by November. The rest is history. The M-39 won the race with a record average speed of 246.496 mph.
