The Boeing 707 was America’s first jet powered airliner and is credited with ushering in the jet age of air travel. It was a developmental outgrowth of the Boeing 367-80 a prototype design which first flew in 1954. The 707 was a larger a design and quickly developed into a series of successful variants. The first 707-120 first flew on December 20, 1957. The 707-138 was a shortened, long-range model, the 707-220, known as the “hot and high” variant and the stretched 707-320 all entered commercial service in 1959. The 707 has been used on domestic, transcontinental and intercontinentalservice by more than 170 airlines around the world.
