The Boeing Model 247 was the first modern airliner. It was the first airliner to incorporate all metal construction with a cantilever low wing and wing flaps. The twin 550 horsepower Pratt & Whitney engines and retractable landing gear it allowed it to fly over 180 mph. The first Model 247 flew on February 8, 1933 and by October of that year United Airlines had them in service on their main routes.
It carried 10 passengers in relative comfort and the traveling public loved it. However the Douglas DC-2, introduced in 1934, offered the airlines a larger more profitable airliner and only 75 Model 247s were built.
