The SE210 Caravelle was the world's first jet-powered airliner to be developed for the short/medium-range market. The French aircraft manufactuer SNCASE formed partnerships with the British companies of de Havilland and Roll-Royce Limited in the beginning of the 1950s. The de Havilland company provided designs and components that it had developed for its own jet airliner, the Comet. Rolls-Royce supplied it’s reliable Avon turbojet engine.

The overall development of the aircraft and all flight trials, including its first flight on May 27, 1955 were conducted by SNCASE. By the time the Caravelle entered commercial service in April 1959, SNCASE had merged into the larger Sud Aviation group.

The Caravelle was popular with both the airline companies and the flying public and it wasn’t long before the Caravelle became one of the most successful European jetliner.
