The Convair Liners, beginning with the Model 240, were intended to be a replacement to an aging DC-3 fleet of airliners. Beginning with the Model 240 airlines could offer passengers faster schedules and smoother flights in pressurized comfort. American Airlines was the launch customer and had considerable influence in its design. The Convair 240 production began in late 1947 and continued until 1950 with 176 aircraft sold to airline customers.
