The Convair 340 was an upgraded design of the Model 240. The 340 was longer, allowing four more passengers to be added to the original seating for forty. It had a greater wingspan, more fuel capacity and could operate with a higher gross weight. United Air Lines was the first operator to take delivery of the 340. Convair sold 209 airliners and corporate 340s before it needed to address the competition from the new turboprops being introduced.
