To meet the competition from turboprops head-on Convair announced the Model 440 in November 1955. Named the Metropolitan, the 440 was basically the same dimensions as a 340.Two new important features were a redesigned exhaust system to quiet the engine noise heard in the cabin and an increase in cruising speed of 5 to 8 mph. A wing trailing-edge extension was also added to increase the wing’s lift coefficient. Continental Airlines was the first carrier to operate the 440 Metropolitan. A total of 199 were built.
