The Convair company did not manufacture any turboprop versions of their Convair Liners. PacAero Engineering produced all the turboprop modifications using the Allison 501-D13 engine. Named the Convair 580 Turbo Liner, this aircraft was the most successful of the Convair turboprop conversions. The 3,750-shaft horsepower developed by the engines necessitated an increase in the height of the vertical tail and a wider horizontal tail. The Convair 580 was faster, could lift more, and had longer range than any previous Convair model. 170 airframes were converted to 580 configurations.
