In late 1945 the U.S. Government released surplus Douglas C-54s onto the civilian market. These spartan military transports were snapped up by both domestic and foreign air carriers and were quickly converted to passenger aircraft with more comfortable accommodations. However, the large double freight doors were retained and included a standard passenger entry door. These converted airliners served the post-war traveling public well into the 1950s.
