Douglas entered the design phase of their first jet airliner in 1952. Although Boeing had a head start with their 367-80, Douglas caught up quickly and the first DC-8-10 first flew on April 9, 1958. Douglas produced many successful variants from the series 10 to the long-range 60 and 70 series. The DC-8 saw a long production run from 1958 to 1972. Its longevity has been remarkable due to its larger cargo capacity than the 707 and reengined DC-8 are still in use in 2019
