The larger Vickers Viscount Type 700 was a greater improvement of the previous model with a larger capacity of up to 48 passengers and a cruising speed of 308 mph. The new type 700 prototype first flew in August 1950. In 1953, BEA placed an order for 20 aircraft and inaugurated the world's first scheduled turboprop airline service. further orders would come in the following year from operators such as Air France and Aer Lingus. The Viscount set the standard for turboprop ailiners in the world wide market.
