U.S. Navy Erie class patrol gunboat commissioned July 8, 1936. The Charleston operated from Dutch Harbor and Kodiak, Alaska throughout World War ll. She provided escort duty and defensive firepower during the Aleutian Campaign. During the attack by the Japanese on May 22, 1943 she evaded aerial torpedoes by radical maneuvering while splashing one enemy plane and driving off others.
